Very close to the municipality of Lezuza is the Libisosa Archaeological Park. The Ibero-Roman city of Libisosa with 2,800 years of history was a human settlement that began in the Bronze Age, later being home to a religious-military defensive site after the Reconquista, until its subsequent abandonment.
The Roman colony of Libisosa enjoyed an exceptional location, at 1,005 m above sea level. It presided over a fundamental crossroads in the Iberian Peninsula, and over a territory that based its wealth on the control of livestock routes, which made it an enclave of exceptional importance in antiquity, currently constituting the archaeological, historical, and monumental reference point. Over time, some materials found at the site, located in the so-called “Cerro del Castillo (Castle Hill)” outline the image of this outstanding Roman site.
In the town of Hellín there is another archaeological park, El Tolmo de Minateda, a true history lesson of 3,500 years, making it the most important archaeological site in the province of Albacete. It is located in a large rock whose location and height made it a strategic place to control natural paths and was the place chosen by different human groups to carry out their settlements from the Bronze Age up to the 10th century AD.
Of all the findings during the excavations carried out, there is an interesting collection in the Hellín Regional Museum. Here, strange objects and everyday utensils, containers, jewellery, clothing items, etc are collected. At the site there is an area with an urban layout called “El Reguerón”, where walls, gates and defensive systems have been built.
The Archaeological Park is located in an exceptional natural setting. It is a territory of great contrasts in which there is an abundance of spectacular natural, archaeological, and artistic heritage elements to be discovered.
