Just 2 km from the town of Elche de la Sierra, there is a mound with some nailed stones and a monolith, it is the “Mirador de Amílcar Barca”, it is believed that the battle that cost the life of the Carthaginian general Amílcar Barc, father of the great Aníbal Barca, could have taken place in this area.
According to current historians, it must have been a very important place of worship for the different cultures that populated this area. Therefore, this viewpoint has a somewhat peculiar recreational area, since each stone table represents each of those cultures and civilisations that passed through these lands (the Iberian, the Carthaginian, the Roman, the Visigothic and the Arab). If you continue on the path, you will see that before reaching the first bend bordering the recreational area on the right, you will find two Visigothic tombs.
At this viewpoint, you will find a replica of the funerary steles from the Roman times (the originals are in the archaeological museum of Albacete). These tombstones were found in this area by a local resident when he was ploughing his land. How many more lies beneath our feet?
A sunrise or sunset from this spot is an unforgettable experience.
Don’t forget to visit the church of Santa Quiteria in Elche de la Sierra, its organ, a world reference point, and its old local laundrette with 75 granite washing areas and two water pipes from one of the town’s natural springs. Guided tours are available from the tourist information office located in the Alfombras de Serrín Museum.
