Riópar stands out for its nature, home to the famous source of the Mundo River. Set between the Argel, Viboreros and Padroncillo peaks, Riópar enjoys a spectacular natural environment. Just 7 km away the natural area of the Mundo River Source and Cañada de los Mojones can be found, an ideal enclave for potholing and is one of the most notable cavities in the country.
It is a municipality in the Sierra del Segura and Alcaraz with a very unique history. The first settlement, called Riópar Viejo, was abandoned and is now a group of rural houses and restaurants that preserve the remains of the old castle with the Church of the Holy Spirit dominating the valley.
The new Riópar, just three km away, emerged around the Royal Factories of San Juan de Alcaraz, created to take advantage of calamine and to manufacture bronze and brass. Mining was an essential industry in Riópar. In 1772, Carlos III authorised the new Royal Factories of San Juan de Alcaraz. It became the most important brass and bronze factory in Spain and the second most important in Europe.
The Royal Factories formed a large industrial complex and are now home to the must-see Museum of the Royal Factories.
Riópar and its surroundings are also an ideal and highly attractive place for hiking and birdwatching enthusiasts, as it is common to see large kettles of vultures gliding over the Calar del Mundo.
