Yeste, a municipality of Sierra del Segura, was a border land with the Muslim kingdoms, which led the Encomienda of the Order of Santiago to establish its headquarters there and build the Yeste Castle in the 13th century as a fortress to which porticoes patios with galleries that gave it a residential and courtly character, were added.
Yeste Castle was the representation of the vast power of the Order of Santiago, which governed most of the mountains between the provinces of Albacete, Murcia, Granda and Jaén, and is the most important in the Sierra del Segura.
It currently has a keep, a parade ground and a palatial area with a beautiful Gothic window, “The Queen’s Window”, split in two and adorned with gothic style lacework. It is in a very good state of conservation, restored and renewed.
In the parade ground is the Medieval Interpretation Centre Vivir la Frontera, an attractive walk through the history of the Middle Ages through its three rooms: the Encomienda room, Mixed room: Muslim and Christian, and weapon room. In the old dungeons there is an Ethnological Museum.
Admission is free, but guided tours can also be arranged at the tourist office next to the castle.
