This lagoon is one of the wetlands of greatest interest in the province, due to the important community of waterbirds kept there. It is a unique aquatic ecosystem, located 35km from Albacete. If you want to spend a day surrounded by birds, seeing them in their natural habitat and photographing them, be sure to visit the Pétrola Lagoon Nature Reserve in Albacete.
It belongs to what is known as saline lagoons, with very unique aquatic ecosystems that can be found throughout Castilla La Mancha – an ideal natural space for bird-watching tourism.
At dusk during spring, you can see the arrival of flocks of waterfowl and the courtship displays to nest. During autumn and winter, you can observe the passage of migratory birds and the arrival of flocks of wintering birds, although the flamingo is the quintessential bird of the reserve. Some even nest in it and raise their chicks there.
The best time of year to enjoy this oviparous species is spring, especially between March and May.
You can also see storks, herons and ducks, the usual inhabitants of this small wetland. However, falcons, eagles and eagle owls can also be seen. A spectacle of nature that you cannot miss.
